Built in 1910 on the end of the Gimli pier. Crushed by spring ice breakup May 02 1943 then replaced with light on a pole till 1973. The original lantern room was saved and stored in the first light keepers daughters backyard till the 1970's when it was put on top of replica lighthouse overlooking the Gimli pier at the Visitor Center which is part of the New Iceland Heritage Museum. The lamp floated in mercury and was rotated by gears attached to a 800lb weight which had to be cranked up each evening. Swimmers used to scale the lighthouse...usually needing assistance...then dive or jump from the railing into the lake. People liked to autograph the lighthouse and locals used to read the names and places of visitors to their town. |
