This lighthouse is on a breakwall and is accessible through the Mentor Headlands State Park. The breakwall is not conducive to foot traffic as there are jagged rocks and openings between the rocks and serious injury could result if you slip. The lighthouse can be reached by boat more safely. It is up for sale and hopefully the Fairport Harbor Historical Society will be able to acquire it and preserve this very significant majestic Lake Erie lighthouse. It replaced the Fairport Harbor Grand River light (USA-279)in 1925 which is on the hill overlooking the harbor and is now operated as a museum by the Fairport Harbor Historical Society. |
