The Fairport Harbor Historical Society operates this lighthouse as a museum. You can climb to the top of the lighthouse and have a commanding view of Lake Erie and the surounding countryside. The Historical Society is very friendly towards ham radio operations at the lighthouse. I was able to hang a 40m and 20m dipole from the lighthouse tower sloped down to the ground for National Lighthouse and Lightship Week 2008. The lighthouse railing is 60' above the ground which is another 40' above Lake Erie. I used a Kenwood TS-2000 for the operation and made about 75 contacts on the last day of the event. Their museum has a lot of marine artifacts and is well worth your time to visit. The Historical Society works very hard to perserve this wonderful lighthouse and keep it open to the public. |
