| The Galway Radio Experimenters Club has a Special Event call sign for the Volvo Ocean Yacht Race, which visits Galway from May 23rd 2009 to June 6th 2009. E I 0 9 V O R will be on the air through out the festival from the old lighthouse on Mutton Island, the finish line for stage 7 of the race. Mutton Island Lighthouse is currently been restored during our visit and while it’s worm and dry there is no running water or electricity available. Power was from a portable generator which kept the radios and coffee running. Our antenna consisted of a Carolina Windom, Long wire, and a Watson vertical for vhf. Through out our stay the bands were extremely changeable, short skip into Europe with much QSB. Very little in the way of state side but the occasional far east contact. |
